Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs - EQUINE ASSISTED COUNSELLING

What is Equine Assisted Counselling?

Equine Assisted Counselling is a unique, interactive form of therapy where horses help facilitate emotional healing and personal growth. Instead of traditional talk therapy in an office, sessions take place outdoors in a peaceful environment, allowing clients to engage with horses through activities like grooming, leading, therapeutically structured activities or simply being present with them.

Do I need horse experience to participate?

Not at all! You don’t need any prior experience with horses. Our sessions are designed for everyone, whether you’re a beginner or have been around horses before. The focus is on emotional connection and self-discovery, not riding or technical skills.

How can working with horses help me?

Horses are incredibly intuitive and can sense human emotions, making them powerful partners in therapy. They provide non-judgmental feedback, help build confidence, reduce anxiety, and improve emotional awareness. Many people find that working with horses helps them process feelings in a way that feels natural and less overwhelming than traditional talk therapy.

Who can benefit from Equine Assisted Counselling?

Whether you’re struggling with something specific or just looking for a new way to explore your emotions, equine-assisted counselling can be a powerful and healing experience. It is particularly beneficial for those struggling with grief, life transitions, overwhelm, interpersonal difficulties, anxiety, stress, trauma and burnout. I offer sessions for adults over 18 years of age, and only in rare circumstances do medical conditions preclude clients from taking part in sessions. Please reach out to me if you think this may be the case and I will be happy to discuss it with you.

What should I wear?

Comfort is key! Closed shoes (like sneakers or boots) are required. I recommend wearing comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting a little dusty and layers, so you can adjust to the weather. Since we’ll be outdoors, it’s also a good idea to bring a hat and sunscreen on sunny days.

Will I be riding the horses?

No, our sessions are ground-based, meaning you won’t be riding the horses. The focus is on emotional connection and personal growth through interaction, not riding.

Can children participate?

Unfortunately I am not offering sessions for minors at this time.

What if I’m afraid of horses?

That’s okay! Many people feel nervous around horses at first. We will take things at your pace, allowing you to build comfort and confidence over time. You don’t have to touch or interact with a horse right away—just being near them can be therapeutic.

What happens if it rains?

All of the available venues have indoor options (such as stables) in the case of inclement weather and sessions can continue as normal when it rains, however should the weather be too severe I reserve the right to cancel or reschedule sessions.

FAQs - NATURE BASED COUNSELLING

What is nature-based counselling?

It is a counselling process where instead of sitting inside a room we spend the session outdoors in nature. We might walk and talk for the entire session, or sit down for most of the session - it is entirely up to the client.

Do I need to be hiking fit?

No, these sessions are not about exercise and are focused on the counselling process, emotional growth and connecting with the natural environment. There is no need to walk for the duration of the session.

What happens if it rains?

If it is lightly drizzling clients are given the option to continue with the session and wear rain protective clothing. In the case of hard rain or severe weather clients are given the option of having their session at my counselling room in Newlands.

What do I wear?

Sturdy closed shoes are required. I recommend wearing comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting a little dusty and layers, so you can adjust to the weather. Since we’ll be outdoors, it’s also a good idea to bring a hat and sunscreen on sunny days.

Can anyone participate?

I currently see adult clients only, and in rare instances medical conditions may preclude a client from taking part in this form of counselling safely. If you are unsure whether this may be the case, please feeI free to contact me and I will assist.
